Heather, we were so saddened to hear of George's passing. Our boyhood adventures included racing his 25HP Evinrude driving the Robin-Nan [later renamed the Queen Mary ] against my Mercury super hurricane 22Hp 14' runabout on Lake Bernard in Sundridge when we were14 and 15. George was a great friend and our memories of him will never fade.. Our deepest condolences to you and your family. Jim and Sandy Gilroy

Sincere condolences on the passing of George, a fine (and fun) teammate on the Red Bombers roster. I can think of nothing but positive things to say about George, and had the occasional encounter with him over the years, once here at Herb Madill's 3 on 3 rink in Kirkland, and another chance path-crossing in Maine, when we were going in the entrance to the Mall and George was coming out. I did a double-take, said "I know you" and he replied "no, you don't". It was fun to renew acquaintances. The photo was taken at UNB, in our essence room at Aitken House. l to r, Cliff Moore, John Kovich, and George. I took that photo in 1965, almost 60 years ago. George was one of the toughest hombres I ever played with, and I can tell you that the world is a poorer place without him.

Heather my condolences . The last time I saw Geoge was over 50 years ago but his name quite offered came up in conversation. This past Christmas I was given Story Worth to record past stories. One of the chapters George is the biggest part of it. The chapter is called “The funniest thing I ever did”. Saturday, summer of 1965 after summer school at UNB. A day I’ll never forget. No one would believe the events of that day. When I got to UNB 1966 George talked me into going out for the Red Bombers, I lasted 4 practices. When I bumped into him on campus he always made me laugh. A special guy. R.I.P.

We send our sincere condolences to you, Heather, and to your family. We also hope that you find some solace in knowing that he is fondly remembered by many friends and colleagues after his lifetime of active community engagement. When George began his career as a lawyer, his determination to succeed, his robust energy and his unique sense of humour really stood out as qualities that would carry him far. We were fortunate to know him then, and I certainly enjoyed the few years we worked together in the 1970’s.
May the rich blessings of memories and family life give you comfort and strength in this difficult time.

My heartfelt condolences to Heather and the kids. George was a prince in my books. I knew since him UNB days and we were both RCS Old Boys and shared many friends from that venerable institution.
My best memories of George are from Nooners, which wasn’t really a league, it was a ragtag bunch of Old Timers who loved the game and played like kids on a pond. George was chief cook and bottle washer and was our money man collecting our fees and paying for this prime time at local Freddy rinks. Through the winter we played Monday, Wednesday and Thursday religiously. There we two loosely formed “teams” - Blue vs White, the Blues were underdogs and we tried harder. This hockey was not for the feint-hearted, much of the time there was real contact but no refs so it was “Gentlemen’s Rules”. Some of us were “hackers” like George & myself, most played Major Junior, Varsity or serious Senior hockey locally. We also had former AHLers and a few former bone fide NHL veterans. But we were all kids in a candy store. We had good goal tenders too but the usual score line was double digits within a full hour 12 to 1 pm, hence the name Nooners. One of the best parts of old men playing seriously into our 60’s was the banter in the dressing room before and after the games. This was where George was in his element, he was one of funniest people I ever knew. We all would tease each other mercilessly and all would laugh and laugh. Once a year George would use excess funds from our “dues” to host us at a local bar and grill… what a crew! Doctors, lawyers, cops, businessmen, professors and the odd professional fool.
I had to share because I care. Rest in Peace George!
I imagine him in Hockey Heaven… Go Blue!

As the husband of one of my best friends I knew George from our early days at U.N.B. I like to argue and he liked to argue with me. I enjoyed his company immensely. He was a wonderful husband and father. My favourite memory is of he and Heather visiting me when I had a small house in France. They were just finishing building their house in Saint Andrews at the time, a place I’ve visited many times since and had good times. He always called me the “cat whisperer” and never allowed me near the remote control for good reason. I will miss having him in my life.

George was a treasured pool pal of those of us in the same age bracket who swim at noon time in the UNB pool. I was always glad to see George appear on the deck. You could count on some pithy comments on the news of the day and humorous observations on life in general. The socializing was just as important as the actual swimming. I remember George telling me more than once that we are all on the runway ready to take off at any time. Now that George has taken off, we sincerely wish for him the happiest of landings.
To Heather and family, deepest sympathy from Dick and from me,
Jayne Nicki

Your dad always gave us the time of day. He always wanted to talk about rugby or football. He always welcomed to his office when we were all asking for $2 bills from our parents downtown at GSJH to buy treats. He gave us the time and he made us feel seen. I will remember that most of all his legacy is in you and your kids.

Dear Heather, Diana, Ian and John,
Gisele and I were so saddened to learn of George's passing. He was an outstanding individual. So entertaining and fun to be around. His sense of humour was unparalleled. I thoroughly enjoyed the many years we practiced law together at Petrie Richmond Goss -- he was a great mentor for me during those formative years of being a young lawyer.
I was most impressed with George's love of life -- his amazing active lifestyle, commitment to his community, and devotion to family that many busy professionals often lose over time.
George was an incredible life force and will be dearly missed. You will all remain in our thoughts in the difficult days ahead.
With much love,
Jamie, Gisele, Anna & Naomi Petrie
