Obituary of Hubert Martin Bartlett
The Reverend Hubert Martin Bartlett, B.A., M.Div., aged 74, died peacefully on June 6, 2004 at Charlotte County Hospital, having spent his last days in his Bayside familial home. Hubert was the son of Edward Hollis and Georgie Othelia Bartlett of Bartlett Mills. He was predeceased by siblings Lawrence (Marion), Hilda May Bartlett, Hollis Beverley (Audrey), and Marvin Douglas ( Moira). Hubert was a graduate of St. Stephen High and Acadia University, and pursued graduate studies at Andover Newton Theological Seminary, Rutgers and Boston School of Theology (Christian Education and Counselling). Following ordination in 1957 Hubert lead in the building of a new church ediface at Nashwaaksis. His strong leadership then lead him on to First Baptist, Halifax, Zion Baptist, Yarmouth, and Bridgewater United Baptist. Hubert was accepted in 1970 into the United Church of Canada and served Centenary Queen Square for six years. He was then appointed the first ever full time Protestent Chaplain to the Canadian Forces Fleet School, Stadacona, and partook in Armed Forces operations in Germany. Hubert's ministry also lead him to St. Andrews Norwood in Montreal, Oxford, Petitcodiac, Miramichi, St. Paul's in Sussex, Carlton Kirk and finally St. Andrews St. David in Saint John. Hubert served many voluntary organizations and was Chair of the Maritime Hospital Chaplaincy, the Chair of the Halifax and Saint John Presbytries, Camp Tawasi, and past president of Kiwanis, St. Andrews. He was also recently appointed chaplain to the Masonic Order, St. Mark's Lodge, St. Andrews. Hubert as well as his family very much enjoyed summertimes in the Chautauqua Institute, New York and his travels to Great Britain. Hubert is survived by brothers Lester and Bernard, and sisters Frances Steeves and Lois Booker. He has touched the lives of many - minister, visionary, colleague, counsellor, orator, friend and brother. But Hubert will be especially missed and continually loved by wife Lois, son Hollis (Sherry), daughters Cynthia (Armand) and Sara (Derek), and cherished grandchildren Charlie, Joshua, Katie, Leah, Clara, Caleb, Rebecca, Julie, Gabrielle and Laura. It was Hubert's request that in lieu of flowers donations are made to the Charlotte County Benevolent Society for children who have disability or are seriously ill. The family will be receiving friends on Thursday evening from 7 to 9 at the Kirk-McColl United Church, St. Stephen, New Brunswick. Members of St. Marks Lodge #5, F & AM will hold a tribute service at the church Thursday evening at 7 o'clock. The funeral will be held 11 am on Friday from the church, McColl Street, St. Stephen, New Brunswick. Interment will take place in the St. Andrews Rural Cemetery.
