Obituary of Selma Smith

The death of Selma Kater Smith of 5 Deacon Lane, St. Stephen, New Brunswick occurred peacefully at home on March 14, 2004. Born in Amsterdam, Holland she was the daughter of the late Coenraud and Cornelia (Roels) Kater. Predeceased by her beloved husband Sidney Smith and mother-in-law Berdina Smith. She is survived by daughter, Rose Burke (Gordon) of Rusagonis, N.B, son, Ronald Smith (Carla) of Queensville, Ontario; sister, Hetty K. Outlet of Yellowknife; brother, Albert Kater of Toronto. Sadly missed by grandchildren, Cindy and Rose Ann Smith, St. Stephen; Ronald Smith(Colleen),Edmonton; David MacDonald (Molly), Pennsylvania; Logan Smith, Queensville; and great-grandchildren, Hannah and Sydney Smith; several nieces and nephews. Linda (Smith) DeMerchant remained a special daughter-in-law. Arriving in Canada as a war bride, Selma fully embraced Canada as home but kept a special place in her heart for her Native land. She lived life to the fullest. In addition to her commitment to her family, she worked as a teaching assistant prior to work at Ganong''s Candy Factory. Following retirement, her talents benefited her church and Seniors activities, including work with the N.B. Senior''s Federation. Selma was a member of the Milltown United Church. There will be no visitation at her request. A Service of Remembrance will be held 2 p.m. Thursday from the Milltown United Church, St. Stephen with Rev. Boyce Martin officiating. The family will receive visitors following the service. Interment will take place in the Upper Mills Cemetery at a later date. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Milltown United Church, Salmon Falls Seniors Club or to the charity of the donors choice. Arrangements are in the care of MacDonald Select Community Funeral Home, 20 Marks Street, St. Stephen.
