Obituary of Richard Lee Saunders
We are sad to announce the sudden death of Richard Lee (Dick) Saunders of St. Andrews, NB, husband of Margaret Anne (Peggy) Saunders on September 3, 2015. Dick was born on June 24, 1928 in Lynn, MA to the late Henry and Gladys (Hodgkin) Saunders of Beverly, MA. After completing his undergraduate education at the University of Massachusetts, Dick obtained his Masters from the University of Toronto. His education was interrupted by a stint in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. While still in the Navy, Dick married his wife of nearly 60 years Peggy Low also of Beverly, MA. In 1956, Dick and Peggy moved to Canada where Dick completed his education with a PhD from the University of Toronto. He was employed as a scientist by what later became known as the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans for his entire working life. He had a long career as a scientist with research and collegial relationships with scientists from all over the world. He was also a mentor to a number of young scientists. Dick and Peggy made St Andrews their home and during his life he was very involved in a number of community activities including Sunbury Shores and the Charlotte County Community Foundation. Dick was a long-time active member of All Saints Anglican Church in St. Andrews. Dick was an avid gardener, his flower and vegetable gardens were well known throughout the community. He loved creating pottery through Sunbury Shores and his pieces are enjoyed by many. He was also passionate about the Toronto Blue Jays and could not have been more pleased with their recent success. Dick and Peggy were blessed with three children Linda Hebb (Ross) of Fredericton; Jean Saunders (Joe Moos) of Evanston, IL; and Stephen Saunders (Catherine Hamilton) of St Andrews. He is survived as well by his older brother, Herbert Saunders of Glens Falls, NY, four grandchildren - Sarah, Benjamin, Gavin and Andrew, his brother in law James Low (Linda) of Saco ME and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his older brother Robert. The family will receive friends at All Saints Anglican Church, 77 King Street, St Andrews, Saturday, Sept. 5, 5-7 pm. The funeral will be held at All Saints Church, St Andrews at 2 pm on Sunday, Sept 6. A reception will be held in the church hall immediately following the service. Interment will take place in St. John the Baptist Chapel of Ease, Chamcook, following the reception. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sunbury Shores, Fundy Community Foundation or a charity of the donor’s choice.
