Obituary of James E. Langerfeld
James Edward Langerfeld, 73, died peacefully the morning of June 17, 2020, at his home on Campobello Island, New Brunswick. He was able to spend his last months on the Island he loved, at his home overlooking Passamaquoddy Bay, thanks to the amazing support and special daily care from Jessie Hooper and all the other nurses, therapists, and doctors of the New Brunswick Extra-Mural Program. Born in Mamaroneck, NY December 7, 1946, Jim was the son of George and Edna Hahn Langerfeld. Jim met his wife Frances Mitchell at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and they were married in 1968 at St. Andrew’s Church in Frances’ hometown of Tampa, FL. Originally a physics and chemistry teacher, later a Registered Land Surveyor, and an estimator and engineer for highway bridge projects, Jim was known for his ability to build or repair virtually anything. He relied heavily on those skills after he and Fran “retired” to Campobello, where they purchased and continued to operate the Whale Watch Motel. Always quick to tell a joke or converse with a stranger, Jim will be remembered and dearly missed at St. Anne’s Anglican Church where he was a Warden, and at Lubec Brewing Company and Lubec Hardware store, as well as the Tiny Tap Tavern and Burt’s Hardware in Tampa. Jim’s resilience and will to live carried him through several bouts of cancer, open heart surgery and more. He had achieved the remarkable feat of giving up a 40 year smoking habit but faced an ongoing battle with cancer and COPD. Jim had many more projects to complete and laughs to share. He made tremendous sacrifices for his family and lived a productive and praiseworthy life. Jim is survived by his wife Frances, sisters Barbara Cumming (Jim) of Saratoga Springs, NY and Jean Warner of North Brunswick, NJ, his daughter Johanna and sons Thomas (Jackie), Joseph Vallabhdas (Jenna) and Friedrich “Fritz” (Georgia), and granddaughters Lucinda James and Eleanor Walker Langerfeld, aunt Elida Langerfeld Peer, and many special cousins, nieces and nephews. Due to the current situation with the COVID - 19 Pandemic, a graveside service will take place at St. Anne’s Anglican Cemetery, Welshpool, NB, on Tuesday, June 30th, 2020 at 12:00 noon at St. Anne's Anglican Church Cemetery. With the easing of restrictions from the Dept.of Public Health; friends are welcomed to attend, as long as social distancing practices are observed in being respectful to those present. A Requiem Mass to be celebrated at St. Anne’s next month. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Anne’s Anglican or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. On line condolences to the family or donations can be made at www.humphreysfh.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care & direction of Humphreys Funeral Home, 20 Marks Street, St. Stephen, NB E3L 2B2 (506-466-3110).
