Obituary of Joyce A. Douglas

Douglas, Joyce Arlean

Mom passed peacefully at the Turnbull Nursing Home in Saint John, NB on June 5, 2023 with her family by her side. Born April 4, 1935 in St. Stephen, NB she was the daughter of the late George & Cora (Greer) Clarke and the wife of the late Frederick (Ted) Douglas.

Kind, thoughtful & generous; it was a rare time that she wasn’t smiling or laughing. She’s lovingly remembered by her 2 daughters Kim Douglas (Mike Flynn) of Saint John, NB and Karen Martin (Joe) of Deer Island, NB , her sister Ellen Sampson (Jerry) of Alabama, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her beloved son Clarke Douglas, her partner Michael McGarry, her 3 sisters - Barbara McAlpine, Shirley Gayton and Georgianne Flaherty & her feline companions Beamish & one-eyed Sammy.

Mom dedicated her working life to serving as a registered nurse, a career that spanned over 40 years, the bulk of those years at the Charlotte County Hospital.

In the 3+ decades that mom was a maternity nurse in St. Stephen she helped deliver & care for so many babies – for multiple families she was there for all of their children. She truly loved looking after the moms & little ones.

She loved animals and got so much joy from taking care of her own plus many stray kitties over the years.

She could often be found sitting on the porch swing next door with our grandmother Cora enjoying nice afternoons and in her retirement years she cherished the time spent with her great friends Kit Richardson & Alphonsine (Al) Poirier. She so enjoyed their regular hairdresser group outings, lunch dates, daily walks & kitchen teas with lots of chatting and laughter.

We are so grateful for the wonderful care and affection she received at both Sea Street Manor and Turnbull Nursing Home in Saint John where she lived for the last 9 ½ years. She was truly treated like family and mom had so many happy times with the caregivers.

By Joyce’s request cremation will take place. The family will receive friends at the funeral home (Next Week) on Friday, June 16th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.

A private graveside service will take place at a later date at St. Stephen Rural Cemetery.

For those who wish donations to the NB Alzheimer Society, Charlotte County CA-R-MA or SPCA would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences to the family or donations can be made at www.humphreysfh.com
