Obituary of Donald George McFarlane
McFARLANE, DONALD GEORGE … Donald George McFarlane, 89, a well-known businessman in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2015 at Passamaquoddy Lodge. Born in St. Andrews, in 1926 he was the last surviving family member of the late Percy LeRoy and Annie Belle (McLaughlin) McFarlane. He began his career in the retail hardware business in 1943 at Keay's Hardware. Together with his friend ,the late Fynes Charlton, they owned and operated Charlton & McFarlane Hardware from 1963 to 1985. He continued greeting and assisting residents and visitors of St. Andrews in the place he loved at the corner of Water and King Streets in St. Andrews until 2012. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and curling. During his life he was an active member of Greenock Presbyterian Church, a 25-year member of St. Andrews Fire Department, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and served a term on Town Council. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Thelma Doris (Stewart) McFarlane of St. Andrews; daughter, Deborah Lee (Raymond Frederick) Milligan of Upper Tantallon, Nova Scotia; four grandchildren, Karen Elizabeth Milligan-Thurston (Steven Thurston) of Hamilton, Ontario, Robert Samuel Milligan of Queensland, Nova Scotia, Margaret Thelma Jean (Shaun) Goodhew of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Donna Rae Milligan (Steven deMoss) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Raymond Thurston, Jacob Ernest Thurston and Zoey Lillith deMoss and sisters-in-law Verna L. (Cross) McFarlane, Joyce Lilian (Turner) McFarlane and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his eight brothers, Howard Parker (Carmen Mary Glass), William John, James Arthur LeRoy (Thelma J. Lord), Albert Laughlin (Eva Florine Duthie), Percy Edwin, Douglas Earle (Evelyn Marie Anderson), Melvin Frederick (Katherine E. Cleghorn), Norman James (Mary Elaine Holt) and one sister, Mary Ellen ( James Norman) Beckerton. In lieu of flowers donations to the Passamaquoddy Lodge Foundation Inc. or to the Greenock Presbyterian Church would be appreciated by the family. Bob Johnson officiating. The interment will follow in St. Andrews Rural Cemetery followed by the reception in the church hall.
