Obituary of Gladys F. Cooke

GLADYS COOKE The passing of Gladys Ferne Cooke, wife of the late Chester Cooke, occurred at the Fundy Nursing Home in Black’s Harbour, NB on Wednesday, April 29, 2020. Born in Carleton County, NB, she is a daughter of the late Roy and Florence (MacDonald) Stoddard. Gladys is survived by her six daughters: Barbara Cooke (Gilbert) of Pugwash, NS; Yvonne Chant (Victor) of Dufferin, NB; Carolyn Willis (Byron) of Dufferin, NB; Peggy Foster (Bill) of St. George, NB;Juanita Longman (Carl) of Dufferin, NB; and Susan O’Dell (Kevin) of Dufferin, NB; 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; sister: Geraldine Disher of Chamcook, NB; brother: Lewis Stoddard of Old Ridge, NB; and a number of nieces and nephews. Gladys was predeceased by her husband Chester, granddaughter Shannon Willis; siblings: Juanita Lloyd, Ruby Cooke, Hattie Russell, Nadine White, Royetta Hatt and Linwood Stoddard; sons-in-law Bernard Daigle and William Allen. Gladys worked for Connor’s Bros for many years and after her husband’s death she worked as a care worker at the St. Stephen Seniors Home. She retired from this position to care for her grandchildren while her daughter Susan attended nursing school. Two and a half years later she returned to her home in Lake Utopia where she resided until her move to Dufferin, NB where she comfortably lived in her apartment surrounded by her loving family. Gladys was never happier than when her family was with her. She loved to bake and to work in her garden. She was a gracious hostess who enjoyed entertaining her family and friends around a sumptuous meal that she would lovingly prepare. Gladys was a long-time, faithful member of the Seventh-day Adventist church. She spent her life in service to others always claiming God as her help and her strength. Due to restrictions from the Dept. of Health, as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic, a formal celebration of life cannot be held as a mass gathering. An invitation to join the live stream broadcast which will take place on Sunday, May 3, 2020 at 2:00 pm, can be received by e-mailing the funeral home at humphreysfh@humphreysfh.com. In lieu of flowers donations to the St. George Food Bank, or a charity of the donor’s choice, would be appreciated by the family.
