My earliest memories of Aunt Evie are vivid still. She showered me with unconditional love which spoke to my soul—she was special and always will be.
With her glorious smile and twinkling eyes, we children followed Evie to her favorite places on Campobello Island. Whether we collected Pirate’s Glass or rocks of all sizes, we celebrated nature with the best guide ever. When it was time to start a fire for chowder on the beach or to watch a seal make its way down the bay, we hurried in anticipation toward our next adventure.
Through the years, Evie’s love of life inspired me more than she’ll ever know. Two years ago, Paul and I took her to the Machias Blueberry Festival. She sang along with the music and laughed heartily at the parodies. Yes, her twinkling, shining eyes were still as contagious for me as when I was five.

Anita: Evelyn would always talk about you, Christopher and Jonathan. When she attended Lily’s Coast Guard graduation in Cape May she stayed with us. We were so glad to extend our hospitality since her door was always open to us when we lived on Campobello. Her home cooked meals (especially antipasto) were the best. Whenever she visited our home, she’d tell us the history of our house which she loved. She could tell us about every nook and cranny. She loved how we redid her dad’s house. She brought Aunt Evie to see the house she raised in. She constantly shared pictures with us. O how we loved her. When we moved off the island, she made sure she stayed in touch with us. I will remember her ever winter night because she hand sewed my “habit” (a fleece with a hood) She explained how she sewed altar garments during that time in her life. O the stories! Most happy some quite telling of her poppy, son and lovingly smiled whenever she talked about her Lily.

Evelyn was such a joy to know. We would often stay with her when we came up to work on the lighthouse and she was always smiling. She was imaginative and creative and was constantly doing something. And boy was she a talented. She could knit up something without any kind of pattern. Every spring her deck was full of flowers and every Christmas season her house was filled with decorations. She was one of a kind and we were lucky to call her our friend. We will miss her - but every time I see a well decorated house for the holidays, I'll think of her and her wonderful house on the hill.

I remember the last time we spoke on the phone, I told Evelyn how much it meant to me on one of my childhood birthdays that she specially made me a German Chocolate cake, and she was just so surprised that I had remembered something that to her was a small thing. It was the sense she always gave me that she saw me as a little person with preferences and dislikes that were just as valid as any adult's that made me feel so loved by her. She made me a ragdoll one year, with blonde braids, I named her Sally. As it says, her hands were never idle, and her creativity in the midst of raising four kids, running her household, singing in the choir, sewing, baking, picking berries, making jams for everyone at Christmas. She invented Mother Goody, who came on New Year's Eve and brought gifts, to accommodate her children's minister father's busy holiday schedule, and Mother Goody sounded to me like the most wonderful thing ever. I remember asking my mother about Mother Goody, and by the confused look on her face, I knew there was no hope of Mother Goody stopping by my own house. Leave it to Evelyn to give her children a special gift bringer and giving that gift bringer the name Mother. That was magical. Thank you, Evelyn, for all you taught me over the years. I have notes and letters that I will cherish forever...rest in peace, dear Evelyn❤️
