Obituary of Jack "Douglas" Raaflaub

Jack “Douglas” Raaflaub passed away in the early morning hours of Friday, March 27, 2026, at the Charlotte County Regional Hospital in St. Stephen, NB.  He was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on July 19, 1938.

Jack joined the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Artillery, in Kingston, Ontario, in 1956, completing his basic training at Camp Utopia, NB.  Jack and all of his four older bothers, as well as his father, Reinold, did military service for Canada, some during war and others during peacetime.  One notable military exercise for which Jack was recognized by the Minister of National Defence in 2008 was his participation in the emergency decontamination efforts at the Chalk River nuclear plant in 1958.

Jack met his wife Shirley of more than 61 years at a dance in Charlotte County in 1956, and they married nearly four years later in 1960.  He released from the army after 20 years of service and then worked as a surveyor during construction of the Point Lepreau nuclear power plant.  Jack finished his working career running his own construction business for many years before fully retiring in 2005.

Jack and Shirley spent 20 years of retirement together and especially enjoyed cruises and a decade of winters spent in a retirement park in Florida.

Jack was predeceased by his loving wife Shirley (DeVeau) and is survived by his three children Christine (Ed) Charter, Steven (Anna) Raaflaub and Keith (Crystal) Raaflaub, as well as his three grandchildren, April, Andrew and James Charter.  Jack also has many nieces and nephews on his parents’ side of the family in Ontario, and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews on Shirley’s side in New Brunswick.

A funeral will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at the Saint Andrews Baptist Church in Saint Andrews, NB.

For those who desire donations to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #8 (Saint Andrews); Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada or Charlotte County Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
