Leona Faye (Corcoran) Monaghan passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family on March 15th, 2026. She was born on May 8th,1927 in Donnacona, Quebec and was the middle daughter of Lewis and Lillian (Johnson) Corcoran.
A remarkable woman, our mother was trained as a nurse at the Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Montreal, Quebec (later known as the Lachine Hospital). She met the love of her life, Peter Edward Monaghan leaving church one day when he commented, “I see there is an angel in every family “. Theirs was a beautiful love story that lasted over 65 years. Together they raised eight children: Michael (Kathy); Brenda (Danny); Margaret (Hans); Carol (Iain); John (Dorothy); Paul (Zita); Bruce (Michelle); and Patricia (Brian). Living in various cities and towns across Canada due to Dad’s career with Canadian Pacific Hotels, Mom was equally at home hosting heads of state as she was volunteering in her local community.
As a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she lived a life of caring and devotion to her family. Mom had a gift for making everyone feel special, as though each was her favourite and that she was absolutely pleased to be spending time with you. As a strong, intelligent women, she taught her children the value of knowledge, history, art, music and culture. Always involved in her community and her church, she also taught us the value of service to others and the importance of connection, kindness and compassion. Mom’s sharp wit, incredible memory and passion for history and politics made her a gifted conversationalist with friends and family alike and a central figure during any family gatherings. She also always knew the perfect response we could have said to someone when we would tell her our tales of woe from school. She is the voice in her children’s heads, guiding our decisions and shaping our lives.
Our mother was creative, resourceful and talented: she could turn a suit to make it look like new again; sew wardrobes of clothes and costumes for her children; and knew how to feed a crowd a heathy delicious meal with what seemed like little effort. Mom always remembered what everyone’s favourite foods were and managed to make each loved one feel significant. An artist later in life, she also filled canvases with beautiful colour and light.
Our mother will be greatly missed by her children, her 23 grandchildren, her 41 great grandchildren, her 5 great-great grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews and dear friends. She cared for so many people throughout her life and leaves behind a tremendous legacy of love.
