Captain Derrick Russell Green

After a hard-fought battle with throat cancer, Derrick Russell Green quietly and peacefully passed away at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Born to Stanley and Mary Green of Seal Cove, Grand Manan, Derrick was the oldest of two children. From a very young age Derrick was gifted with a mind made for learning and he was always top of his class. After high school he attended military college in Saint Jean, Quebec and later transferred to Mount Allison University where he went on to earn his Bachelor of Science and degree in engineering. But the studies didn’t end there it was off to obtain his sea going captain’s papers and a chance to see the world and the world he did see being to every continent but Antarctica. His longest stint was in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates where he lived for 10 years with his sons Kitchener and David, going to school and getting to work along aside their dad was an experience of a lifetime, it was there that the family meet and befriended Sadam Hmoud a extremely close family friend. On return to Canada Derrick continued his life at sea from working up North to working aboard the Grand Manan Adventure and the Grand Manan V, Derrick certainly had a soft spot for the crew from Blacks Harbour and told of the countless pranks and fun that was had aboard and the end of summer bonfire and singsong where Derrick got to use his pipes. His last post was with Marine Atlantic sailing aboard the ferries that run from North Sydney to Newfoundland, Derrick spoke highly of the captains and crews he worked along side and who made him feel like family.

Derrick was a member of the Lower Sackville Masonic Lodge and other pass times included building and collecting model trains, hunting and going to camp in his earlier years and cheering on his beloved Toronto Bluejays.

Derrick leaves behind his Mother Mary Green of Grand Manan, his sons Kitchener of Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, and David of Summerside, PEI, his only Granddaughter Arielle of Summerside PEI, his younger sister Vanessa Ritchie and brother-in-law John Ritchie of Grand Manan, one special niece Felicia MacLeod of Souris PEI, two dearly loved Aunts Joan Brown and Sandra MacDonald. A special nod to Kilmeny and Beverly who remained a fixture in his life and two dear friends that thought of Derrick like a father, Chad Ens and John Marty.
