Bruce Brown

Obituary of Bruce Brown

William “Bruce” Brown, affectionately known as “Brucie Brown”, born March 30, 1946, in Saint John, New Brunswick, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2026, just one month shy of his 80th birthday.

Bruce was truly one of a kind. While he was recognized as the oldest living person with Down syndrome in Canada, that was never how those who knew him defined him. To friends, family, and his community, it was simply an interesting footnote to a life lived fully, joyfully, and without limits.

Bruce was a beloved fixture in the Saint John community and could be found at countless local events, whether serving as Little League commissioner, selling 50/50 tickets at Flames games, or conducting traffic. Bruce had a bit of magic in him, spreading joy.  Even a simple bus ride will never be the same.

A passionate sports fan, Bruce spent countless hours at ball fields and rinks. He was a devoted Boston Red Sox fan and could rattle off even the most obscure statistics. Bruce also loyally cheered for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Dallas Cowboys, win or lose.

Music was another great love.  Whether listening, singing, dancing, or conducting a choir, Bruce brought smiles wherever music was present, and boy did he love a parade.

Bruce worked for many years at Key Industries, where he took great pride in his work and formed lasting friendships. Of all his roles, he was most proud to serve as Saint John’s “Goodwill Ambassador,” a title he carried with sincerity, enthusiasm, and deep commitment. Bruce greeted every day, and every person with positivity, kindness, and genuine love.

Bruce was predeceased by his devoted mother, Margaret Belyea Brown; his father, William Leroy (Roy) Brown; and his sister-in-law, Carol Jean Brown. He is survived by his loving family: his brother, Paul Belyea Brown; nieces and nephew Heidi Werth and her husband Doug, Heather Brown, Erik Brown and his wife Kate Dei Cas; great-nieces and nephews Morgan and Madison Werth, Cole and Reed Brown; along with many cousins and extended family. Bruce was deeply loved and cared for by all who were fortunate to know him.

The family extends special thanks to Joanne McDonald, Brenda and Jack Doucette, Sharon Johnson, Dr. Ginette Griffin and the compassionate staff at Passamaquoddy Lodge for their exceptional care and support.

A celebration of Bruce’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bruce’s memory to Key Industries, Saint John, or Passamaquoddy Lodge, St. Andrews.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Humphrey’s Funeral Home, 20 Marks Street, St. Stephen (506 466 3110).  On-line condolences to the family or donations can be made at www.humphreysfh.com.
