It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Danny Thompson, who left us peacefully on November 30, 2025. Born on March 19, 1958, Danny lived a life filled with adventure on the high seas, generosity, and unwavering love for family and friends.
Danny is survived by his parents, Blair and Frances Thompson, sister, Trudy Fitzgerald, brother-in-law Pat Fitzgerald and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Danny had a lifetime career with Atlantic Towing Limited. He started as a deckhand on January 9, 1980, and rose through the ranks to retire as Master Mariner, the highest rating possible on civilian vessels. His stories were mesmerizing recounting how he began his career hauling paper from Saint John to Fort Lauderdale with his uncle, Captain Hazen Wilcox, to hauling oil rigs from the Gulf of Mexico to Indonesia.
He circumnavigated the globe once on the Atlantic Hickory, one of only two crew members who accomplished this significant feat. Danny also spent many summers going up to Baker Lake, Nunavut to bring in supplies to the local community.
When transversing the Northwest Passage he had photos of the boat stuck in ice and a polar bear on the deck. He sailed on most bodies of water on the globe and had many stories of seeing the world at 7 knots.
A beloved son, sibling, “Uncle” to Domino and friend to many, Danny will be remembered for the loving care provided to his parents, the cheese tax to Domino and sense of humor and friendly personality.
A time of visitation will be held at Humphreys Funeral Home (20 Marks Street St. Stephen NB E3L 2B2) on December 5, 2025, from 1-2 PM, followed immediately by a memorial funeral at 2PM. Internment of ashes to take place at the St. Andrews Rural Cemetery at a later date.
