Obituary of Murlene Atkinson
Atkinson, Murlene
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Murlene Atkinson who departed this life peacefully on May 4th, 2025, at the Charlotte County Hospital with her family members present and visiting to comfort her and say their good-byes.
She was the daughter of the late Frank and Kathleen (Polkinhorn) Daggett of Grand Manan. She was predeceased by her brother Allison and his wife Joy (Wilson) Daggett, brother Arnold Daggett and partner Jack Titus. She is survived by her brother Larry and his wife Donna (Johnston) Daggett. Also, her son Lane (Sue) Atkinson of Rothesay NB, daughter Debra (Bill Cunningham) Atkinson of Rothesay NB, daughter Lisa (Shayn) Williams of Campobello NB, and son Michael (Kathi) Atkinson of Oak Bay NB. Also survived by her grandchildren Andrew, Samantha, Taylor, Abbey (Clarke), Daniel (Maxine), Hannah, Nelleka and 6 great grand children.
While “Nanny’s” first love was visiting with her family, Murlene loved playing cards and listening to music (Kenny Rogers having a special place in her heart!). She also spent many hours walking with her beloved Toto and searching for sea glass at the Marsh and Stanley’s Beach. She had many hobbies over her life, including being a girl guide leader, a member of the Grand Manan curling club and reading, which she much enjoyed . As much as Murlene loved to travel to visit family and friends, (some favorite memories from the Netherlands, Italy, Florida, BC and Calgary) she never lost her love of Grand Manan and would often say she was worried “her gills might dry up” if she was too long off the island. Perhaps that was at least partially due to her passion for dulse and lobster!
Murlene loved meeting and greeting people and her work life with Fundy Cable, Sears, Harbour Gifts and Bank of Nova Scotia gave her lots of opportunities to do just that.
As per Murlene’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. The family will plan a small celebration of life on her beloved Grand Manan at a later time.
In Lieu of flowers, donations to Charlotte County SPCA or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
Online condolences and donations may be made at www.humphreyssfh.com.
The family would like to thank the staff to CCH for their support and a special thank you to her roommate Dorothy.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care and direction of Humphrey’s Funeral Home, 20 Marks Street, St. Stephen, N.B. E2L 2B2 (506-466-3110).
