Obituary of Gregory Stephen Smet
Smet, Gregory Stephen
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Gregory Stephen Smet on March 25, 2025, surrounded by his children, after a short battle with cancer.
Greg was born on August 4, 1955 in Brantford, Ontario to the late Leon and Dorothy Smet.
He is survived by his wife, Carol (Tait); his daughter, Tara (Scott) LeBlanc; his son, Jared (Rachel) Smet; granddaughters, Emma LeBlanc and Olivia Smet; his brothers, Mark (Gail), David (Jennifer), Robert (Catherine), and Wayne (Melanie); as well as many nieces and nephews.
Greg grew up in St. Stephen, N.B., where he attended school and worked alongside his father and brothers in their family business, Smet Monuments. He later spent many years working at Bayside Port before starting his own business, Smet Trucking, where he enjoyed driving transport trucks alongside his son Jared.
But greater than his work ethic was his love for his family. He cared for his wife, Carol, as she dealt with health issues, and they recently celebrated fifty years of marriage. Greg was a devoted father and grandfather, cherishing every moment with his children and granddaughters. Because of his height and his demeanour, he earned himself the nickname “Gentle Giant”.
A man of deep faith, Greg loved his congregation, his friends, and, above all, his God, Jehovah. One of his greatest passions was the ministry, and upon retirement, he dedicated much of his time to helping others learn about the Bible. His hope for the future remained strong, and he looked forward to the better days ahead. One of his favourite scriptures was Revelation 21:3, 4: “And he will wipe out every tear from his eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away”.
We will have a celebration of his life on Sunday April 6, 2025 at 3:00 PM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 9161 Route 3, Old Ridge, N.B., E3L 4W9
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care & direction of Humphreys Funeral Home, 20 Mark St. St. Stephen, NB E3L 2B2 (506 – 466 – 3110)
