Obituary of Sqn. Ldr. Gardiner Melvin Turner AFC, K.C.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gardiner Melvin Turner, aged 91, who left us peacefully on February 23, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Oswestry, England, in 1933, Mel lived a life of remarkable achievement and adventure. As a 17 year old, he joined the Royal Air Force, having been inspired as a child by an "excellent view over the airfield ...where we saw a wide variety of small aeroplanes, mostly trainers such as Miles Masters and Magisters but sometimes, very exciting, a Spitfire or a Hurricane". He went on to become an esteemed test pilot on B squadron and was awarded an Air Force Cross in 1968. His passion for flight and commitment to excellence made him a respected figure among his peers.

In the 1960s, Mel made the life-changing decision to move to Canada, where he transitioned from the skies to the courtroom. Embracing a new challenge, he pursued a career in law, becoming a trusted advisor to many in his community through his work and many volunteer commitments. His intellect and integrity earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike.

By far, Mel’s greatest joy, however, was his family. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 61 years, Sandy, and a proud father (father-in-law) and grandfather to James (Gundula), Kate (Moe), Sebastian and Johanna, respectively. He cherished every moment spent with them and delighted in their adventures and accomplishments. His love and dedication to his family was unwavering, and he often spoke of how pleased he was of the lives they had built together and expressed gratitude for his good fortune in life.

We will remember Mel as a man of wisdom, humour and many talents and passions, a keen aviator, a dedicated lawyer, and a loving family man. His legacy of ethics and kindness will live on in those who knew him and loved him. Per Ardua Ad Astra

Mel is survived by his immediate family but also his beloved brothers, Frank (Arlene) and Russell and many cherished nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice, in Mel's memory.
